WELCOME TO KIPP ACADEMY NASHVILLE

Knowledge is Power Program

No excuses. No shortcuts.

KIPP, the Knowledge is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and life.

Founded in 2005 under the leadership of Randy Dowell, KIPP Academy Nashville is one of over 80 nationally-acclaimed KIPP schools in the United States currently serving more than 20,000 students.

Increasing Potential/Cultivating Character
Located in a low income neighborhood accessed by Trinity Lane and Dickerson Road, 90% of KIPP students qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program, a leading indicator of poverty in our nation. Since 2005, students who enroll at KIPP Academy Nashville consistently test at least two grade levels below national averages. With limited parental support and zoning into some of the lowest performing schools in Nashville, these children have less than a 20% chance of attending college and breaking out of the cycle of poverty that exists in their neighborhood.

Characterized by our "no excuses/no shortcuts" philosophy, KIPP Academy Nashville’s focused approach to closing the achievement gap in education includes:

* A shared core value that every low income student WILL (not can) learn

* High-quality, well-trained teachers and school leaders

* 35% more class time through an extended school day/week/year
A rigorous college-preparatory curriculum and disciplined culture of

High expectations, personal responsibility and support
KIPP Academy Nashville students make between 1.5 to 2 years of academic growth each year, and score higher on annual TCAP exams than students enrolled in metro Nashville’s other public schools. They matriculate to both public and elite private high schools. Over 80% will ultimately enroll in a college or university.

Their increased earnings potential, coupled with the discipline and work ethic they acquire at KIPP, strengthens the families and communities of Nashville.

"The KIPP schools are the most striking example of a movement that
is improving education across America." The Economist, July 9th 2009
